Have you ever heard of the word “orthodontics”? You probably have, and even if you haven’t, you still probably came across in it your early childhood. Orthodontics is they way by which dentists can arrange your teeth is such a way that they are aligned. It was a common misconception in those days that only children with misaligned teeth needed orthodontics, but today we are now enlightened and we now know that orthodontics help to rectify a lot of problems in the mouth, and it is not restricted to children alone. Adults also need orthodontics.

Let’s use this practical example, for instance. Consider a kid who has a really large gap in his front tooth. This is a problem, and it can be corrected in quite a number of ways, depending on a host of other factors. For instance, the state of health of the other teeth around the gap-tooth will have to be a factor. All things considered, the tooth can be crowned, or alternatively, the tooth can be totally removed and replaced with tooth bridges or simply dental implants. This latter option is usually avoided if it can be helped.

The next best thing to do in a situation like this is to look to orthodontics for the solution. This is cool when you already have your other teeth healthy and good-looking, as you do not want them damaged by the crowns. Instead, you just rearrange them to cover up the gap!

Orthodontics is being used these days for cosmetic dentistry. The reason is that some people may have buck teeth, or misaligned dentition. Or they might not have any of these, but might simply what attractive teeth. Some of us, however, might mot feel so good about orthodontics, as it might conjure up gory pictures of childhood, where the poor kid had to put on those terrible headgears for months. It might seem like a punishment, and you mind might be saying “Uh-uh there’s no way I’m going to let them do that to me!”

I will agree with you on the score that orthodontics takes quite a while before you are rid of the burden. It could take you six months to three years before you are free from it, but you should know that it often takes a while before your teeth can adjust to the new arrangement. Of course you will need to be under the noses of professionals to check on you, make adjustments and make sure the whole process is going on as planned and that you are not reverting to your previous tooth-state.

One thing I can say for orthodontics, however is that they have improved greatly and you can now have braces that are virtually invisible, mingling therapy with comfort and style. Nowadays, your after-braces treatment no longer has to be the torture of childhood, but simply a retainer plate for a couple of months which serve simply to ensure that your teeth do not revert back to their previous state – the state before orthodontics.
