Millions of people around the globe are known consumers of various telecommunication services. With the rapid upsurge of technological advancements, transnational—even transcontinental— communication has been made possible. Companies now boast of wider and wider coverage, and guarantee to keep loved ones together, no matter the distance. One communication device that has now gone a long way since its inception in the 1800s is the telephone.
The telephone is a device originally intended to send and receive calls, but as part of the expansion of global telecommunication, it can also now transmit other forms of data. A telephone call is made by entering a sequence of digits, or the telephone number of the receiving party. Each telephone number is unique, so as to reach a specific endpoint. As telephone networks now are connected internationally, the format of telephone numbers has been standardized. International numbers consist of at most 15 digits. The country prefix comes at the beginning, to be followed by the area code or the city code and lastly, by the receiving party’s number. Does the standardization of international numbers serve other purposes? Yes. For one, it gives a country a sort of an identity. Suppose you are about to receive an international call app. Just by looking at the numbers, you will be able to locate the origin of the call. Country prefixes serve like the nations’ ID. These prefixes also lengthen phone numbers, thus making more unique combinations to accommodate the growing number of subscribers. It also provides a sense of organization for the format and allocation of numbers.
The telephone is considered of great relevance to several industries in the international field, and telecommunication companies are heavily investing on research to keep up with the ever increasing demand. It has spawned various technologies such as long distance calling, cellular phones, videophones, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and many more. International affairs are now conducted with lesser difficulties.
Telephones are now more than just communication devices. They are now powerful tools by which the world functions: it has now become a necessity. Same way, we also can download some international call apps from the internet to get the cheap international calls. Just imagine how our state of affairs would be without it. And as man is insatiable by nature, we should expect that it would not stop here and further innovations will be there to come.
