If you do not know what dental implants are all about, then here’s a little overview to fill you in. A dental implant is the replacement of the natural teeth with synthetic ones. Currently, it is the most money-draining of all dental procedures. Even as it is expensive, it is also hard and strenuous to carry out – both on the dentist and on the patient. It can take quite a long time for the effects of the dental implant to begin to take root. When we talk about long time here, we mean months, and even years, sometimes for the teeth to begin to function like natural ones. As technological improvements are being brought to the house of dental implants, more and more people are turning to it as an option for improving their teething situation. However, it has its side effects too, and this article is written just to address it.
The first of the many is the financial sting to it. Not even your insurance company can shelter you from the sting of the cost. In any case, your insurance company will not protect you in the first place since they deem any form of dental implant a luxury, one that can be done without, and they will therefore allow you bear the full weight of the cost of a dental implant. There are some companies that can offer you coverage to get the implants, but the long-term cost in terms of interest is not in your best interest, believe me. Although the cost of a dental implant is not fixed, it can range anywhere from $1000 to $4500.
Aside from that, there is also the uncertainty factor. This is the fact that the patient, on undergoing the implant, may then reject it later-on on the grounds that they are discomforting and obtrusive. In another case, for reasons unpredictable, the implant may fail to fit, and everything will still be chalked up to the patient’s expenses, because as a rule, the patient is made to sign a mandatory document stating that he/she accepts that there is a possibility of a failure and that the dentist will not bear responsibility for the failure.
Another problem arises from the fact that the dental implant itself is a dangerous process, since the process involves drilling a hole from the gum into the jawbone. After the implant, it might take some time for the wounds to heal, and this can create a source of discomfort for the client. Although you might get promises of apparent painless ness, it is wise for you to be careful, and make sure that your dentist knows what he is doing.
Then of course, there is the possibility of the wounds from the implant getting infected due to improper treatment of the wounds. This might start out as mildly discomforting, but if no adequate attention is given to this probability, it can prove to be very fatal.
You might just be exposing yourself to real problems.
